Associate Director of Development and Public Relations

Sarah Barker

Associate Director of Development and Public Relations

Sarah Barker is the Associate Director of Development and Public Relations for Friends Homes as part of the Management Services Agreement with The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. She joined the team in November 2016. Sarah grew up in the Western North Carolina Mountains and holds a degree, in English Arts, from Haywood Community College. Sarah’s career has been primarily in the non-profit sector, with a focus on philanthropy. She is passionate about raising money to benefit the mission of Friends Homes. Sarah and her husband, Joey, reside in High Point with their two Dachshunds, Coco and Rider. Sarah enjoys all things outdoors and in her free time can be found outside refinishing an old piece of furniture, walking, gardening, reading or simply soaking in the sunshine.

Susan Brewer

Susan’s experience in retirement living began when she was a volunteer at age 10. Professionally, she has held various positions in independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities. During Susan’s first year at Friends Homes, she supported the sales and marketing team as they exceeded their goal of becoming 100% sold in 18 months, attaining that goal in just 11 months.

Susan and her husband, Richard, have a son, Andy, a daughter, Chloe, a Yorkie, and a Cavachon. In her spare time, Susan enjoys competitive speed skating, golf, and dabbling in investing.

Alice Carroll

Alice started her career at Friends Homes in 1979 as the social worker for Whittier Nursing Center. During her first 11 years, she also helped with activities and managed medical records and staff development. In 1989, she became the health care administrator for the assisted living and skilled nursing units at Friends Homes at Guilford. During that time, Friends Homes’ campuses adopted the Eden Alternative principles of person-centered care, and in 1998, Alice joined the North Carolina Culture Change Coalition that promoted culture change in all of the state’s nursing facilities.

In 1995 Alice moved to a corporate position, managing the housekeeping and laundry services for both campuses. In 1999, Alice accepted the position of special projects coordinator, a new position initially created to bring both campuses into Y2K readiness. Over the years, she has developed our data network which now includes hardware and software support for our electronic medical records application. Alice is still a member of the NCCCC and has served as chair for three terms.

Alice enjoys woodworking, outdoor activities with her two dogs, Darla and Petey, and spoiling her 11 great-nieces and nephews.

Teresa Cox

Teresa has been with Friends Homes since the wellness center and pool opened in 2000, and has many years of experience in senior fitness. Teresa started college late in life, first attending the New York Cooking School. She then earned undergraduate degrees in exercise and sport science, and one degree in nutrition. She went on to earn a master’s in gerontology and a master’s in sociology from Appalachian State University. She obtained her doctorate in education-kinesiology from UNC-Greensboro.

Teresa loves people and enjoys all of her roles at Friends Homes.

Teresa and her husband, Bob, have three Corgis. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, camping, cooking, and learning about new places and things.

Rick Hatch

Rick earned his associate degree in business management from Rutledge College in 1980. He began his career working in the construction industry and handled production management in casework manufacturing for a family-owned custom cabinet shop. He has also been involved in commercial construction project management.

Rick is married and enjoys rebuilding and using antique aluminum campers. One of his favorite places to visit is Floyd, VA.

Shukriyyah Jones

Shukriyyah started her nursing career as a CNA here at Friends Homes. She worked in healthcare while continuing her education — first becoming an LPN, then an RN, and then completing her bachelor’s in nursing. Shukriyyah worked part-time at Friends Homes for two years while she took a position in the emergency room at Randolph Hospital. The experience and knowledge she gained in the ER have been a benefit to the residents under her care at Friends Homes.

Shukriyyah enjoys spending time listening to music, being with her family, cooking and traveling. Of course, her most favorite companion is her Malti-Poo, Gizzie, who makes an occasional appearance here at Friends Homes — to the delight of both residents and staff.

Carly Kirkman

Carly graduated from UNC Greensboro with a BS in Nutrition & Dietetics. She also received a Master’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a nutrition concentration from North Carolina Central University. Carly is a Registered Dietitian and is Board Certified as a Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition. Carly is a native of Greensboro and now lives in Climax, NC with her husband and son. She enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Pat Manuel has worked in the field of human resources for more than 30 years. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, then went on to receive her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in human resources from Gardner Webb University.

A native of Greensboro, Pat is married and has two daughters and two granddaughters. In her spare time, she enjoys being with her grandchildren.

Missy McGinnis

Missy McGinnis is the associate executive director of the Friends Homes Guilford campus and the administrator-of-record for the skilled nursing and assisted living centers there. Missy holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Drake University and a master’s degree in health care administration from Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine.

A native of Iowa, Missy enjoys travel, reading, swimming, movies, and the Special Olympics. She is the mother of two sons, Jackson and Holden, and is married to her husband, Michael.

Alex graduated from Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Alex has been part of the Friends Homes family since February 2018 and brings with him over 17 years in the Food Service industry and 7 years in the Environmental Services industry. His current role oversees and supports Dining and Environmental Service programs at both campuses.

In his down time, Alex enjoys spending quality time with his wife, Wanda, and son, Nicholas, and their extended family and friends. Alex also enjoys trying new restaurants and loves to play ice hockey and sailing on cruises. Fun fact: Alex played minor professional hockey in Georgia and has cruised 36 times in 33 years.

Freda Robinson

Freda is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a B.S. in nursing and a master’s in nursing administration. She has worked in the field of long-term care since 1974.

A native of High Point, NC, Freda has three children, including a set of twins, and a “fur-baby” named Gizzie. Her hobbies include crocheting, coastal fishing, and traveling to the mountains.

Daryl graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture and Turf Management. Daryl joined Friends Homes in 2020 and brings with him over 10 years of leadership and management experience primarily within the horticulture industry in both the public and private sectors.

Originally from State Road, North Carolina, he now resides in Burlington with his wife Jenna, his son Harrison, and their two Great Pyrenees dogs Asher and Magnolia. In his spare time, Daryl enjoys spending time with his family, photography, traveling, spectating aviation shows and being outdoors.

He is very excited to be a part of Friends Homes and looks forward to enhancing and advancing the services provided to our residents.

Donna Sprinkle

Associate Executive Director, West Campus

Donna received her undergraduate degree from Guilford College and a master’s degree in public policy and public administration from Purdue University. After graduating from Guilford College, she had a three-year internship at Kendal-Crosslands, a Continuing Care Retirement Community. Donna is a certified paralegal in North Carolina and is a licensed nursing home administrator in Illinois, North Carolina, and Ohio.

Donna is a birthright Quaker and attends Archdale Friends Meeting where her brother-in-law is the pastor.

Arnold R. “Arnie” Thompson

Arnie Thompson has been executive director for Friends Homes since August 2016. He previously worked as the Associate Director for River Landing at Sandy Ridge for 11 years and as the Controller for The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. corporate office for 5 years.​

Arnie is a graduate of Appalachian State University where he earned a B.S.B.A. in accounting. He holds his Certified Public Accounting certificate in the state of North Carolina and is a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Arnie is a licensed nursing home administrator.​

Prior to his affiliation with Friends Homes and the Presbyterian Homes, Arnie was a manager with the public accounting firm McGladrey & Pullen in Greensboro, NC.

Dorian Edwards

Director of Life Enrichment

Dorian is a graduate of East Carolina University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Leisure Services. He is a licensed Recreation Therapist and Nursing Home Administrator. Dorian joined Friends Homes in 2007. During his time at Friends Homes, he has developed and created a strong Therapeutic Recreation Program for residents, supported the person-centered care model as well as overseen numerous internship opportunities for students. He is an advocate for senior adults which is evidenced by the programs he develops for the residents he serves.

He is the biggest New York Knicks fan, enjoys reading, music, podcasting and spending time with his three children and their dog, Mocha.​
