If you think retirement means slowing down, think again. At Friends Homes, residents are busy living life to the fullest – embracing fun, friendships and a sense of adventure. Whether it’s ziplining, taking a scenic train ride through Asheville, soaking up art and culture or relaxing by the beach, there’s always something new to explore.
Thanks to its prime location in Greensboro, Friends Homes offers residents easy access to everything North Carolina – and beyond – has to offer. The Life Enrichment team curates a lively calendar of trips and events designed around resident interests. In recent months, favorites have included a visit to Caesars Virginia Casino and Resort, an afternoon at Red Oak Brewery for its new art exhibit, a four-day, three-night getaway to Wilmington, and a private tour and luncheon at the historic Graylyn Estate. Residents also enjoy dining at local flavors at spots like Emma Keys, Nazareth Bread Company, Stamey’s BBQ and Café Europa. Each outing is thoughtfully planned based on resident feedback and tailored to a wide range of interests, from arts and history to food, music and adventure.
One recent favorite was a charming picnic at Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, Afterward, residents stopped by a Homeland Creamery for ice cream. They loved the ease of it all – no need to worry about making reservations or arranging transportation. All they had to do was show up and enjoy the day.
That’s the beauty of life at Friends Homes: the details are handled, so residents can focus on what matters most – enjoying themselves. From accessible transportation to well-organized schedules, every outing is designed with comfort, convenience and enjoyment in mind.
“Our goal is to create experiences that reflect the interests of our residents,” says Mary Wallace, Senior Life Enrichment Coordinator. “The best part of my job is getting to know them on a personal level. When you understand what makes someone light up, whether it's live music, art, or local history, it makes planning these events so fun. These outings aren’t just trips, they’re meaningful opportunities to explore, connect and build friendships.”
Residents also help shape what’s offered. A resident-led Activities Committee meets regularly with team members to brainstorm ideas for upcoming outings and on-campus events. There’s also a suggestion form open to all residents, ensuring everyone has a voice in what’s planned.
At Friends Homes, retirement isn’t about slowing down; it’s about living fully. With enriching experiences at your fingertips and a community that truly listens, every day brings something new.
So ... where to next?
